Nation: Kwa kwa Ka Wakw

I am from the remote village of Gwayi (Kingcome Inlet). I am of Kwa kwa Ka Wakw Nation descent (Musgamawg Dzawada enuwx tribe), and I am of the Mountain goat clan (ninalk'inuwx). I was deeply immersed in my cultural heritage at an early age, and I have had many opportunities in observing many fine artists at work. I am inspired and very grateful for the many artists who are encouraging me in my journey so far. Accomplished artists of all mediums, such as Gilbert Dawson (nephew) woodcarver! Peter Dawson (cousin) print maker, Jay Simeon Jeweller, woodcarver, David Neel a world renowned kwaguitl artist, whom, I began my apprenticeship under, doing wood carving.

It is important for us artists to learn & remember the stories / teachings / songs / dances, and honour our ancestors by passing them onto our children. Been a parent and representing my ancestral heritage with respect and honour, by been drug and alcohol free, is most important to me! I was very instrumental in forming the, 'Kwa Kwa ka Wakw Urban Dance Group' in 1993 which is still in existence today. We share songs/dances to educate about the Kwa kwa ka wakw Nation's world view, history & culture. We have shared at schools, conferences, graduations, festivals, feasts.

We were honoured, privileged and enriched to celebrate through song and dance at numerous different occasions such as: Youth conferences, Yoreme Festival in Mexico, Graduation ceremonies, Elders conferences, Schools and Banquets.

Making my residence in North Vancouver, and striving to enhance my training by studying the Kwa kwa ka wakw designs, I am a determined artist working in the medium of hand engraving using both gold and silver, however I am working to be an all rounded artist by studying the art of print making, totem carving, mask carving.
